While helping your teen practice, you will be challenged at times to keep your cool as your teen makes basic errors of inexperience. Here are some tips to help you be effective while coaching in the car:
- Check frequently to ensure that your teen understands your direction.
- Keep things moving by giving your instructions in real time.
- Point things out as they happen.
- Act like a co-pilot – not a taskmaster.
- Keep an eye on the road ahead at all times.
- Teach new driving skills and smart driving judgment.
- Reinforce key points.
- Be a good partner. Do your best to:
- Mask fear
- Enjoy the experience
- Be accepting
- Be calm and patient
- Be clear, consistent and direct
- Be forgiving
- Be a good listener and communicator
- Provide feedback
- Be positive and respectful
- Be resilient
- Exercise self-control
After each practice, make sure you capture the learning through recaps. Document each practice using a log that includes time spent driving and the specific skills practice.
