Speed, Braking and Backing

Controlling speed, braking and backing are things you will use every time you get in the car. Here are some tips to help you practice.

Speed Control

Driving can require a lot of changes in speed. Sometimes new drivers have problems judging the right speed for a curve in the road or when conditions change – such as when entering a neighborhood, exiting a highway or when it starts to rain.

Make sure you practice light acceleration and gradual stopping. This will help you get comfortable controlling your speed in a variety of driving situations. Once you are comfortable in light traffic, ask your parents to help you practice highway driving. Get lots of practice entering and exiting highways. So you can learn how to speed up and slow down when merging with traffic. And remember to drive the speed limit.

Controlling speed will make you a smarter driver and help you avoid accidents.

Braking

There are two kinds of braking you will use often: cover braking and controlled braking. Cover braking is when your right foot hovers over the brake pedal – when you think you might have to brake. Controlled braking is firm, even pressure on the brake pedal. It is used in nonemergency situations. To use controlled braking, press the brake until you feel resistance. Then use steady, even pressure.

Backing

Backing up can be difficult because it is hard to see obstacles behind you. It also requires more space to maneuver your car. This is because the back tires of a car do not turn. The best thing to do is to position your car so you can pull forward instead of backing. Ask your parents to help you practice backing up. Empty parking lots are a good place to practice.
